Choosing to move to a different city can be a big decision, and sometimes you may feel like being stuck in indecision, like I am right now. I have been browsing studio/flats to rent and job opportunities in four UK cities – Liverpool, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Manchester for 2 months now and still cannot make a final decision yet. I even tried to spend few days in Liverpool, Birmingham and Edinburgh to take the pulse of these cities.
But I can share with you things that I have learned on this process.
Here are some key factors to consider when moving to a different city to keep in mind:
Job Opportunities
One of the main reasons people move to a different city is for work. Before you make a move, research the job market in the area you’re considering. Are there opportunities in your field? For example, Manchester is known for its strong digital and creative industries, while Leeds has a strong finance and legal sector. What are the salaries like? Can you find work easily if you need to change jobs in the future?
Have to confess I went that far as to apply for jobs only to see if they would contact – and was surprised to find that I’ve got about 10 invitations, all of them ignored, for an interview so far. Not bad, right?
Cost of Living
The cost of living can vary greatly from one city to another. Research the cost of housing, food, transportation, and other expenses in the city you’re considering. Will your salary be enough to cover these costs comfortably? Can you afford to live in the neighborhood you want to live in?
Also, in the United Kingdom, you must keep in mind that unless you have a UK guarantor, you’ll have to pay the rent upfront for at least 6 months, though some companies – like Grainger in Liverpool and Birmingham, for instant – ask even for 12 months rent upfront. They wouldn’t rent you for a short time.
Quality of Life
Quality of life can be subjective, but it’s important to consider factors such as safety, healthcare, education, and access to green spaces when choosing a city. Research the crime rate, healthcare facilities, schools, and parks in the area you’re considering. Or anything else that is important to you for that matter. Like libraries, pubs, shopping centers and the likes.
Climate
The climate can have a big impact on your daily life. If you’re moving to a different climate, research the weather patterns and seasonal changes in the area. Are you comfortable with the temperature and weather patterns? United Kingdom is famous for its shitty bad weather most of the year, but up North is worse that in the South.
Climate does count when thinking about outdoor activities, do you enjoy hiking? then being near the mountain is the best option but if you enjoy sipping pina colada on the beach, try to find a beach city.
Traffic and Transportation
Transportation can be a major consideration when choosing a city. Research the public transportation options, traffic patterns, and walkability of the area you’re considering. Will you be able to get around easily without a car?
Culture and Entertainment
If you’re moving to a new city, you’ll want to consider the local culture and entertainment options. Research the local music, art, and food scenes, and check out the events and festivals in the area. This is important especially if you’re an extrovert, but if you’re ok to spend leisure time by yourself, shouldn’t matter that much.
Liverpool, Bristol, Birmingham, London, Edinburgh, and Leeds all have rich cultural histories and vibrant cultural scenes, with a range of museums, art galleries, and theaters. If you’re looking for a city with a particular cultural focus, such as music or theater, you might want to research which city has the most to offer in that area.
Education and Healthcare
If you have children, or are planning to start a family, the quality of education in the area should be a key consideration. Research the local schools and education system. Similarly, research the quality of healthcare in the area. Is there adequate access to medical care and facilities?
Community
Moving to a new city can be a big adjustment, so it’s important to consider the community and social opportunities in the area. Research local clubs and organizations that align with your interests, and consider attending local events and meetups to make connections.
Your social network is also an important aspect of your quality of life. Moving to a new place can mean leaving friends, family, and other support systems behind. Research the community and social activities in the area you are considering. Will you be able to make new friends easily? Are there clubs or groups that share your interests?
Try and connect with people from that area on social media like Facebook, twitter, Instagram or follow local bloggers to understand the specific of the place.
By considering these factors and doing your research, you can make an informed decision about whether a new city is the right fit for you.
Yes, it can be a tough decision to choose a new city to move to. It’s important to take the time to research and consider all the factors that are important to you, and to weigh the pros and cons of each option. You might also want to visit each city and get a feel for the atmosphere and culture before making a decision. Ultimately, the best choice for you will depend on your individual circumstances and priorities, and it’s important to make a decision that feels right for you.
